I wrote this piece for my sister Marloes, who is also my best friend. For me, the song is about the’ walk of life’ that everyone takes, including Marloes. Starting with birth, youth, years of external stimuli and influences – the learning process -, the love, the hate, the hope, the drama, emotion and peace.

The melody came up while I was playing the piano two months ago. I often record these kind of ideas on my iphone, and when I listened to it later, my mind immediately added strings to it. I knew Sietse, Camilla, Rani en Jonas, who form the ‘Red Limo String Quartet‘ from my time as a pianist with Wouter Hamel and Kyteman’s hiphop orchestra. I first wrote the arrangement the old fashioned way: with pen and paper. Luckily, it was still readable so we were able to translate it to a digital version. When we were planning the recording of the string session, I told them it was a straightforward and easy arrangement, so they probably wouldn’t need to rehearse much. That turned out a bit beside the truth though.. as the piece was written in B major, which – I now know – is quite a difficult key for strings. But.. they did a great job, for which I couldn’t thank them enough!

This song was written quite fast, although the second part took some more time then the first part. Actually, the titel was the biggest problem. Yesterday, the day before the release, I had a concert with my trio and I still didn’t have a titel. So I decided to ask the audience to come up with a good title. Someone came up with ‘Reconnu’. It’s French for ‘recognized’. It fits the song very well, cause a lot of people, when they heard the song, claimed that they know it from something-yet they don’t know from what, thank god! Also I had kind of a ‘French’ feeling with the song. So, this new song is called ‘Reconnu’

This Thursday, Feb 10, Pieter de Graaf plays in the Bimhuis in Amsterdam with his trio. Pieter starts at 20h30 and will play an one hour show. Pieter will be joinied by Sven Happel on bass and Jasper van Hulten on drums on stage. The band Captain Hook will play after the Pieter de Graaf show. Two concerts for the price of one.
